Frequently Asked Questions

If you would like further information on any of the questions listed below, or if this FAQ does not answer your questions, please call (08) 7228 5818 during our business hours to speak to our friendly reception staff.

Online Bookings

We now use Automed as our online booking system. Automed allows us to better communicate with you and tailor our booking system to meet your needs.

Scripts

Yes, you do require an appointment with your doctor for a script. This may be face-to-face or via TeleHealth (phone/video). Your doctor needs to review your medical history, and ensure that your prescription is appropriate and any required monitoring is up to date (eg. blood pressure checks, blood tests).

We ask that you book an appointment with your doctor if you have further questions about your medications or aspects of your medical care.

We are now able to send you prescriptions via eScript. We can send your script as a QR code to your mobile telephone or email account.  This allows you to fill the prescription at your pharmacy of choice.
However, you can also pick up your script or have it faxed to your pharmacy if you prefer.

Referrals

Yes, you do require an appointment for your referral. This appointment can be made face-to-face or via TeleHealth (phone/video). Your doctor needs to ensure your referral is appropriate, and that your medical information is up to date for the referred doctor. Your doctor may also need to arrange tests before your specialist appointment to ensure safe and efficient care.

A referral made by your GP to a specialist does not need to be made out to a named provider.  It may be used for any doctor of that specialty.

It is against the law for a GP or referring doctor to backdate a referral.  Please check you have a valid referral prior to your specialist appointment.

A referral made by your GP to a non-GP specialist lasts for 12 months, starting from when you are first seen by that specialist. A referral made from one non-GP specialist to another lasts for three months.

You may be eligible for a GP Mental Health Care Plan to access a Medicare rebate to see a psychologist if you have a mental health disorder. You will need to book a double appointment with your GP to assess your mental health and formulate a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan, if appropriate.

Some patients are eligible for a Medicare GP Management Plan. To be eligible you must have a chronic disease that requires complex managed care. Some patients may require ongoing care from a multidisciplinary team comprising of their GP and at least two other health or care providers. These patients may be eligible for a Medicare rebate for up to five allied health appointments relevant to their care plan in a calendar year. The Medicare eligibility criteria are complex, so please check with our practice nurse or your GP.

Tests

Each radiology provider has their own billing policy. Please discuss your needs with your GP during your consultation.

No, if you do not already have a form from your doctor you will need to arrange an appointment.

Most blood tests do not require appointments and are walk ins. Our Clinpath room is open from 8:30 – 12:30 weekdays, and 8:30 – 11:30 on Saturdays.

However, some specialised tests do require bookings. Your doctor will advise you if your test requires a booking. Bookings for Clinpath may be made via telephone on (08) 8366 2000 or online via their Bookings Website.

Patient Information

Dr Emily Carroll and Dr Kristin McLaughlin recognise that it can be difficult going to the doctor, particularly if you have one or two children and are trying to contain everyone in a quiet waiting room.

Little Pears has a purpose built outside area (including a boat!) where children can play and run around.  If you need to discuss information about your child that you don’t want them to hear, these conversations can take place privately outside.  Your child won’t feel like they are being talked about while they are playing and you can convey the information you need.

Young children are particularly good at spreading viral infections.  An outside waiting area reduces this risk while the air conditioning has UV filtration to kill viruses and bacteria as well as 6 cycles of fresh air change per hour.

Services for women and men’s health will be offered at Little Pears as parents can often neglect their own health care because of the difficulties in attending appointments with their children.

If you have cough, runny nose, fever, diarrhoea or feel like you have an acute illness please book for a respiratory clinic appointment at Little Pears.  These clinics are run to limit your and other’s exposures to the infection you may have.  Little Pears has purpose designed air conditioning including 6 cycles of fresh air per hour and UV filtration.

Pear Tree Family Practice and Little Pears have the same electronic medical database.   The practice Doctors at Pear Tree Family Practice and Little Pears can all access your medical history.

Patients of all ages are able to attend both sites in order to select the doctor or time of preference that suits you.  Little Pears has been designed to better service young children and their families, but everyone is welcome.
